Thermal Mass
Building a house made out of concrete block has many advantages, including insulation properties as it relates to thermal mass.
Thermal mass is the ability of materials such as concrete masonry to store heat for a period of hours or even days. With the ability to provide thermal storage, concrete block absorbs heat slower and retains it longer. This keeps interior walls warmer during the winter (when outdoor temperatures are cold), and keeps interior walls cooler during the summer (when outdoor temperatures are hot). When peak heating and cooling loads are evened out, homeowners achieve a comfortable environment with more consistent control over energy costs.
